Algeria, like many other countries, has a long history of pet keeping that is closely linked to culture and environment. In Algeria, pet owners tend to gravitate towards three main categories of pets: dogs, cats, and birds.

Dogs are common in Algeria, especially in rural areas. Many Algerians keep dogs for a variety of purposes, such as guarding homes, farms, or livestock. Breeds such as the Saluki are well suited to the Algerian climate and are commonly kept for hunting or herding. In urban areas, dogs are also kept as pets, although this is less common for religious reasons, as Islam says that dogs are unclean animals; therefore, they should be avoided. However, there are families in coastal cities who value dogs for their companionship, and often choose smaller breeds that are easier to handle indoors.

Cats, on the other hand, are widely accepted and loved in Algeria; especially in urban households, where they are kept as pets. Cats have been part of Algerian culture for centuries and are often associated with cleanliness, which fits well with Islamic beliefs that favor cats because of what the Prophet Muhammad often said about them. Algerian streets are often inhabited by stray cats, some of which are looked after by the community.

Finnally ; Algerians enjoy owning birds for their beauty, melodic songs, and the sense of harmony they bring to homes. Birds are culturally valued symbols of freedom and are easier to care for, making them ideal pets in both rural and urban settings. Their companionship and the joy they provide make them popular across the country.

Overall; pet ownership in Algeria falls into three main categories: dogs for practical purposes, cats for companionship and cultural value, and birds. These categories reflect the diverse cultural and religious factors that shape pet choices in the country.
