Overview of the Algerian History

Algeria became a French Colony shortly after French armed troops conquered the country in 1830, and it served as a full-fledged Department of the French Republic for the majority of the next 130 years.


During this time, large numbers of individuals immigrated from france to settle in Algerian cities.


In certain cases they outnumbered the locals and became the majority. French influence on algeria's culture, economy, and Society was considerable but it was often resented by the native population, who complained of favoritism, exclusion from the political process, and denial of basic rights and freedoms.


The independence movement originated during World War I 1914-1918 and gained attraction after French promises of increased autonomy in Algeria were not realized. Following World War II in 1954 the National Liberation Front (FLN) launched a guerillla war against france and sought diplomatic recognition at the United Nations to establish a sovereign Algerian State.


Although during competence operated in the countryside notably along the countries Frontier the most intense fighting occurred in and around Algiers, where FLN members launched a series of brutal Urban operations known as the Battle of Algiers 1957.


French forces which had swelled to 500,000 troops regained control, but only via ruthless means, and the brutality of the comeback weekend the French politics resolved to prolong the conflict. In 1959, Charles Dugal said that algerians had the right to select their own future.


Despite terrorist attacks by French, algerians opposed to Independence and an attempted coup in Friends by parts of the French army, an agreement was signed in 1962, and Algeria gained its independence.
